Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede has expressed fierce opposition to comments made by Donald Trump, the recently elected 47th President of the United States, regarding the region’s governance. In a statement provided to an AA reporter, Prime Minister Egede asserted that Greenland is “not for sale,” firmly stating, “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We will not lose our long-standing struggle for freedom.”
Egede’s remarks come in response to Trump’s assertions shared on December 23 via his Truth Social account, where he emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland for U.S. national security. He characterized the control of the island as an “absolute necessity,” prompting significant backlash from officials in Greenland as well as the broader international community.
