GRIFF 60 Cargo Drone: Supporting Ukraine’s Military Logistics
Norwegian drone manufacturer Griff Aviation is stepping up to provide significant support to Ukraine’s military by donating its heavy-lift GRIFF 60 cargo drone to enhance frontline logistics and resupply operations. This advanced drone, equipped with eight powerful rotors, boasts the capacity to transport up to 60 kilograms (132 pounds) of essential supplies, including ammunition, medical equipment, and food rations. Such capabilities allow the drone to deliver critical materials while minimizing the risk to military personnel on the ground.
With a flight endurance of 33 minutes, the GRIFF 60 is specifically designed for rapid, agile missions that require limited exposure time. This operational effectiveness will enable Ukrainian forces to sustain their military efforts more efficiently amidst ongoing challenges. Griff Aviation has emphasized that this contribution is made entirely on their own initiative, underlining their commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts.
Volunteer Efforts and Contributions from Norway
The GRIFF 60 drone is set to be delivered to Ukraine through the Norwegian volunteer organization Fritt Ukraina, which plays a pivotal role in organizing and facilitating aid efforts. One volunteer commented, ‘The most important thing we can do from Norway is to give Ukrainians the opportunity to protect themselves.’ This statement underscores the drone’s potential to not only enhance military logistics but also actively save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers in the field.
Norway, as a leading European defense partner for Ukraine, has made substantial commitments this year, pledging a staggering 85 billion Norwegian krone (approximately $7.8 billion) in aid. Support primarily flows through the Nansen Support Programme, which finances military supplies alongside essential civilian assistance, such as repairs to energy infrastructure and humanitarian relief efforts.
Norway’s Comprehensive Military Support
The Norwegian government’s extensive support has included pledges of F-16 fighter jets, air defense systems, artillery shells, and armored vehicles. These contributions play a crucial role in significantly enhancing Ukraine’s combat readiness and operational capabilities on the battlefield. Additionally, Norway is actively involved in training Ukrainian forces and is supporting an entire brigade as part of a broader European initiative to bolster defense efforts.
In a progressive move, the Norwegian government approved a technology transfer in August 2024, aimed at enabling the production of 155mm artillery shells within Ukraine. This initiative not only strengthens the Ukrainian military’s self-reliance but also ensures a steady supply of critical munitions as the conflict continues.
