Gunpowder Production: A New Venture for Ukrainian Defense

In a significant development for Ukraine’s defense capabilities, the Ukrainian Defense Industry Joint Stock Company (Ukroboronprom) has teamed up with the American firm D&M Holding Company to launch a joint venture focused on gunpowder production in the United States. This announcement was made during the International Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine held in Rome, highlighting an urgent response to the critical shortages currently plaguing the Ukrainian ammunition industry.

Gunpowder, a fundamental component in ammunition production, is increasingly becoming essential not just for Ukraine but on a global scale. By establishing the plant in the US, the initiative also aims to enhance security against any potential threats, particularly from Russia, ensuring that production operations are shielded from attacks.

A Commitment to Strengthening Defense

Oleg Hulyak, the General Director of Ukroboronprom, expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the United States for this newfound collaboration and the opportunities it presents. He stated, “We are sincerely grateful to the United States of America for this support and the new opportunities it presents. Equally important is that the enterprise will be operating in a safe area.” Hulyak emphasized that this venture is pivotal in bolstering production independence and improving the operational readiness of Ukraine’s military forces.

The establishment of this new gunpowder facility is expected to significantly aid Kyiv in ramping up its ammunition production, particularly the crucial 155mm artillery rounds. Ukraine began serial production of these artillery shells in September with a clear goal of achieving self-sufficiency in ammunition supplies, moving away from reliance on older Soviet-era stockpiles which included 152mm artillery.

Towards Self-sufficiency in Ammunition Production

This shift towards domestic production aligns with Hulyak’s vision for the Ukrainian defense industry, which he articulated by stating, “The Ukrainian defense industry must gradually transition from large-scale procurement to its own production to meet pressing needs.” This transition is not just strategic but essential for ensuring Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defense requirements in the long term.

As the conflict continues and international support remains critical, initiatives like this joint venture represent a pivotal step toward enhancing Ukraine’s military autonomy and resilience. By fostering local production capabilities, Ukraine hopes to secure a more stable supply chain for its armed forces, ultimately contributing to regional security.
