Germany Plans to Expand Its Heron Drone Fleet
The German Air Force is set to bolster its capabilities with the acquisition of three additional Heron TP drones from Israel, marking a significant enhancement in its unmanned aerial fleet. A procurement proposal amounting to 25 million euros (approximately $29 million) is under preparation for parliamentary approval, as reported by Hartpunkt. With this latest acquisition, the total number of Heron drones in service with the German Air Force will rise to eight, including five already operational models that are currently leased.
This strategic move is part of a long-term plan to transition these leased drones into purchases, an option laid out in the original agreement between Germany and Israel. Six of the new drones are expected to be stationed at Jagel Air Base in Schleswig-Holstein, while two will be based at Israel’s Tel Nof base, which serves as a joint training facility for German drone operators.
