HMS Dauntless Conducts Live-Fire Drill
The Royal Navy’s HMS Dauntless has recently executed a live-fire drill off the coast of Wales, effectively training to combat multiple drone threats within a simulated operational environment. Collaborating with defense technology company QinetiQ, the exercise saw the active involvement of over 350 personnel, showcasing the ship’s capabilities under real-world conditions.
Equipped with an array of advanced weapon systems, including the Phalanx close-in weapon system, a 4.5-inch naval gun, and 30 mm automatic cannons, HMS Dauntless engaged various drone threats. The drill specifically targeted Banshee and Hammerhead drones, rigorously testing the vessel’s radar, sensors, and air defense capabilities.
Drone Engagement and Technology
During the exercise, HMS Dauntless successfully neutralized Banshee and Hammerhead drones, which were designed to mimic potential hostile threats. The Banshee Whirlwind, engineered by QinetiQ, is a high-speed aerial drone capable of reaching speeds over 200 miles per hour, making it an ideal target for testing agility and defense. Meanwhile, the Hammerhead drone, an uncrewed surface vessel, served to replicate maritime threats.
In support of the drill, a Wildcat helicopter deployed from the ship launched Martlet missiles, capable of striking targets at a distance of up to 6 kilometers. This multi-platform engagement highlights the Navy’s increasing reliance on advanced technology to counter modern warfare threats.
Enhancing Operational Readiness
The primary aim of this training exercise was to bolster the operational readiness of HMS Dauntless ahead of anticipated deployments. As part of the military operation known as “Sharpshooter,” this drill served as a crucial final assessment prior to the ship’s upcoming assignment with the UK’s next Carrier Strike Group in the Indo-Pacific region.
Moreover, the drills simulated high-threat situations reminiscent of those encountered by the HMS Diamond during recent operations in the Red Sea, further preparing the crew for potential real-world confrontations.
Commitment to Modern Defense Strategies
UK Minister for the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard, commented on the significance of the test, stating, “This exercise illustrates the Royal Navy’s adaptability to confront evolving threats, such as drone assaults in the Red Sea, while also emphasizing our partnership with industry to harness cutting-edge technology for the UK’s security at home and abroad.”

Rising Defense Spending
National defense remains a core priority for the UK government, particularly in response to escalating global instability and mounting pressures on NATO allies to amplify their military expenditures. As a result, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has committed to increasing the UK defense budget to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027.
