Hungarian Spies Detained by Ukraine’s SBU Security Service

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on Friday the apprehension of two suspected Hungarian spies who are accused of conducting intelligence operations in the Zakarpattia region, which lies along the border with Hungary. According to reports, this espionage activity focused on sensitive military information, including the locations of air defense systems.

Tensions between Ukraine and Hungary continue to escalate, particularly since Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been vocally supportive of Moscow since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago. This backing has extended to Hungary’s refusal to send military assistance to Ukraine and its opposition to Ukraine’s efforts to secure European Union membership.

Discovery of Espionage Activities

In a significant revelation, the SBU declared that for the first time in Ukraine’s history, a Hungarian military intelligence network has been uncovered, engaging in espionage activities that threaten national security. The agency confirmed that two agents connected to this network had been detained.

The suspects were identified by the SBU as a 40-year-old male and a female, both of whom have backgrounds in military service. They were reportedly operating under the guidance of a Hungarian intelligence officer and now face severe legal repercussions, including the prospect of life imprisonment.

Allegations of Recruitment and Surveillance

The SBU’s investigation revealed that the male suspect had been receiving payments from the Hungarian intelligence officer and had attempted to recruit at least two individuals to act as informants. Their mission extended beyond merely collecting military information; they were also instructed to analyze the socio-political sentiments of local residents.

Furthermore, the agents were tasked with predicting how these residents might react in the event that Hungarian military forces entered the region, which is a worrying indication of Hungary’s strategic interests in the area.

Ethnic Composition of Zakarpattia

The Zakarpattia region is home to a significant ethnic Hungarian population, with the last official census conducted in 2001 reporting around 150,000 individuals of Hungarian descent living in Ukraine. This demographic detail highlights the complex historical and cultural ties that exist in the region.

The detention of these suspected spies adds another layer of tension to the already fraught relations between Ukraine and Hungary, which could have broader implications for regional security and international diplomacy.
