Hybrid Networking Kits Enhance French Army Communication

The French defense procurement agency has partnered with Thales to deliver hybrid networking kits specifically designed for French Army vehicles. These state-of-the-art modular kits significantly improve access to high-speed commercial communication services such as OneWeb and 5G, facilitating effective connectivity across a wide spectrum of tactical situations.

These hybrid networking kits will complement the existing connectivity systems under the ASTRIDE 3 program. They work alongside the latest-generation satellite terminals, high-capacity line-of-sight communications, tactical software-defined radios, and advanced digital wireless services, ensuring a robust communication framework.

Seamless Integration with Military Vehicles

Designed for seamless integration, the hybrid networking kits are compatible with various military vehicles including the Griffon, VBCI, and Serval. One of the key advantages of these kits is that they can be installed without any modifications to the vehicle’s existing design, promoting ease of use and operational readiness.

An initial order of 25 kits is set to be delivered for field trials during the upcoming EXTO SJO 2025 exercise towards year-end. Following this, another 25 kits are planned for delivery next year, with the ultimate goal of equipping all designated French Army vehicles with this advanced communication technology.

Advancing Battlefield Connectivity

The hybrid networking approach merges commercial networks with established military communication systems, thereby enhancing connectivity on the battlefield. As part of the ASTRIDE 3 initiative, these mobile and modular communication stations have been developed to provide networking capabilities compatible with NATO standards.

The introduction of these systems aims to create a resilient network that connects command posts all the way from theater-level operations down to smaller tactical units. This interconnected architecture is vital for supporting collaborative combat operations, enhancing efficiency and coordination among units.

Insights from Thales

Alexandre Bottero, Vice President of Networks and Infrastructure Systems at Thales, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Thales will be supporting the French Army in its strategic transition to hybrid communication networks,” he stated.

He elaborated on the program, mentioning that, “This latest stage in the ASTRIDE 3 program will combine technological innovation with a deep understanding of operational requirements to provide the hyperconnectivity needed for collaborative combat in high-intensity conflict scenarios.” Bottero’s remarks underscore the strategic significance of enhancing communication capabilities in modern warfare.
