Insta Steel Eagle ER Drone: Innovations for Ukraine

In a significant development for Ukraine’s defense capabilities, Finnish company Insta has launched the Insta Steel Eagle ER (Extended Range) drone. This advanced drone has been specifically designed and rigorously tested for use in the challenging environments of Ukraine. While Insta was responsible for creating the explosive charge, the drone’s components were supplied by a Ukrainian partner company, whose identity remains undisclosed. Currently, the drone system is available for deployment in Ukraine, with plans to introduce it to European and NATO markets in the near future.

Tuure Lehtoranta, Vice President of Sales and Customers Defence at Insta, emphasized the innovative nature of this new solution, stating that it integrates extensive expertise with cutting-edge technology, all tested under rigorous conditions. This combination aims to enhance the operational effectiveness of Ukrainian forces in their ongoing conflict.

Key Features of the Drone

The Insta Steel Eagle ER is engineered to deliver a flying directional explosive charge, specifically crafted for deployment in difficult conditions. One of the standout features of this extended range version is its improved payload capacity, which significantly enhances both its effectiveness and cost-efficiency compared to previous models. The drone is capable of transporting its explosive payload to an optimal detonation position above the target.

Once in position, the drone releases a charge that contains steel or tungsten balls, effectively dispersing over 3,000 fragments over an area of approximately 2,000 square meters (21,527 square feet). The total weight of the explosive charge is 3.6 kilograms (7.9 pounds), showcasing its formidable capabilities in targeting and neutralizing enemy positions.

Support from Finland for Ukraine

Finland has emerged as a crucial ally in bolstering Ukraine’s defense and combat readiness. In a notable collaboration, Finnish company Summa Defence has partnered with local Ukrainian firms to establish a drone manufacturing facility in Finland. This initiative aims to ramp up drone production specifically for Ukraine, while also expanding manufacturing capabilities across Finland and other locations in Europe.

Set to commence production in the first half of this year, this facility reflects Finland’s commitment to enhancing the military capabilities of its neighbor. In light of the ongoing conflict, Finland has significantly increased its defense spending by over 70 percent, amounting to 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in April 2022.
