Iran Suspends Cooperation with Nuclear Watchdog

In a significant move, Iranian lawmakers voted on Wednesday to halt collaboration with the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This decision follows a recent 12-day escalation marked by Israeli and U.S. strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, a development closely monitored both domestically and internationally.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf voiced strong criticism of the IAEA, stating on state TV, “The International Atomic Energy Agency, which refused even to marginally condemn the attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, has put its international credibility up for auction.” His remarks highlight Tehran’s growing frustration with the agency amid rising tensions.

Pending Approval from the Guardian Council

While the parliamentary vote concluded with 221 lawmakers in favor and one abstention, the suspension of cooperation still requires the endorsement of the Guardian Council, which reviews legislative measures in Iran. If approved, Ghalibaf indicated that the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran would cease all collaboration with the IAEA until the safety of its nuclear facilities can be guaranteed.

Lawmaker Alireza Salimi elaborated on the implications of the vote, revealing that IAEA inspectors would be barred from accessing nuclear sites unless granted permission from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. This shift could significantly alter the dynamics of international monitoring in the region.

Escalation of Military Tensions

The backdrop to this decision is marked by a notable increase in hostilities. On June 13, Israeli forces launched extensive bombardments targeting Iranian nuclear sites, resulting in the deaths of several prominent military figures and nuclear scientists. Following these attacks, the United States undertook unprecedented military operations against Iran’s nuclear infrastructures in Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz.

The operations culminated in a ceasefire being brokered just two days later, but not without further intensifying the conflict and criticism from Iranian officials towards the IAEA, which they perceive as ineffective in addressing the threats against their nuclear program.

Public Sentiment and Reactions

In the aftermath of the parliamentary vote, lawmakers were seen chanting anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” as reported by state television. This public display underscores the heightened emotions and unresolved tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The Iranian leadership has consistently criticized the IAEA for its perceived neutrality and lack of action regarding Israeli military aggressions. As the international community watches closely, Iran’s strategic decisions could lead to a further deterioration of diplomatic relations.
