Istif-class Frigate: A Milestone in Turkey’s Naval Modernization
Anadolu Shipyard has marked a significant milestone in Turkey’s naval modernization efforts by laying the keel of the fifth Istif-class frigate for the Turkish Naval Forces. This event, part of the broader 2020 national warship initiative, follows closely on the heels of the launch of two other vessels from the same program, the TCG İzmir and TCG İzmit. Notably, the delivery of the fleet’s lead ship, the TCG Istanbul, was completed just one year prior to this latest ceremony.
The construction of the Istif-class frigates is a crucial element of Turkey’s strategy to enhance its naval capabilities. As the Turkish defense ministry aims to replace the aging Yavuz-class frigates, which have been operational since the 1980s, the new program will introduce up to eight advanced vessels to the fleet.
The Expansion of Turkey’s Naval Fleet
The national warship program spearheaded by the Turkish defense ministry represents a significant investment in the country’s maritime security. The design of the new fleet was awarded to STM Defence, with the new ships being slightly larger than the existing Ada-class corvettes, yet possessing similar combat capabilities. Currently, three shipyards—Anadolu, Define, and Sedef—are working on the sister ships of TCG Istanbul simultaneously, with all deliveries anticipated by 2026.
In addition to the current projects, TAIS Shipyards has also secured a contract for three more Istif-class frigates, further solidifying Turkey’s commitment to modernizing its naval forces. This comprehensive approach underscores the nation’s goal to enhance its defense capabilities in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
Key Features of the Istif-Class Frigate
The Istif-class frigates are designed with advanced features to support a variety of naval operations. Each vessel measures 113 meters (371 feet) in length and is capable of accommodating over 100 personnel. These frigates are equipped to carry rigid hull inflatable boats, unmanned aerial systems, and an S-70B Seahawk helicopter, significantly enhancing their operational versatility.
In terms of armament, the Istif-class is outfitted with a range of advanced systems including various sensors, an electronic warfare suite, a 76-millimeter main gun, and dual 35-millimeter close-in weapon systems. Additionally, they are armed with anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles, along with torpedo launchers, making them formidable assets for maritime warfare.
Performance and Capabilities
The propulsion system of the Istif-class frigate is engineered for high performance, featuring twin propellers powered by a General Electric gas turbine and two MTU diesel engines. This configuration allows the vessels to reach impressive speeds of up to 29 knots (54 kilometers/33 miles per hour) and offers a range of 5,700 nautical miles (10,556 kilometers/6,559 miles). Such capabilities are essential for long-range maritime operations.
