Germany Acquires Joint Strike Missile for F-35 Jets
Germany has made a significant move in military modernization by opting to acquire the Joint Strike Missile (JSM) for its fleet of F-35 fighter jets. The deal, valued at around 6.5 billion Norwegian kroner, equivalent to approximately $642 million, was approved by the German Parliament on June 4. With this agreement, Germany becomes the fifth nation to choose the Kongsberg-developed missile, joining Norway, Japan, Australia, and the United States in this strategic procurement.
The formal arrangements for this acquisition are set to be completed by the end of the first half of 2025. Under a government-to-government agreement, Norway will manage the procurement of these advanced air-to-ground missiles from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace on Germany’s behalf, leveraging the same bilateral framework that facilitated prior deals, including the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) and collaborative submarine projects.
Optimized Missile Technology for Enhanced Capability
Eirik Lie, the President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, expressed enthusiasm regarding Germany’s selection of the JSM, stating, “We are pleased to welcome Germany as the fifth nation to select the JSM for its F-35 fleet.” He emphasized the missile’s advanced features, including its navigation system, flight profile, and automatic target recognition technology, all of which make it exceptionally suited for use with the F-35 fighter.
The integration of the JSM into Germany’s 35 new F-35 jets, which are being purchased from the United States, will enhance the operational capabilities of these aircraft significantly. The 4-meter-long missile fits seamlessly within the F-35’s internal weapons bay, preserving the jet’s stealth attributes while expanding its combat reach.
Performance Specifications of the JSM
Designed with anti-surface warfare in mind, the JSM boasts impressive specifications. This missile, weighing 416 kilograms (917 pounds), can engage both land and naval targets at a remarkable range of approximately 350 kilometers (217 miles). Notably, when operating in low-altitude mode to evade enemy air defenses, the effective range of the missile is halved, demonstrating its tactical versatility.
The missile’s performance extends beyond mere range; it is engineered for diverse environmental operations. The JSM is effective across open oceans, coastal areas, and land environments, providing naval fire support and anti-surface engagement capabilities. Its advanced guidance systems incorporate Global Positioning System (GPS), Inertial Navigation System, and terrain mapping to ensure accuracy, even in conditions where GPS signals may be compromised.

In addition to its guidance capabilities, the JSM features a two-way data link that enhances operational flexibility. This allows for real-time communication and data exchange, greatly improving targeting accuracy and mission effectiveness. The missile is equipped with an advanced mission planning system that empowers operators to consider geographical factors when planning attacks, thus optimizing targeting outcomes.
Equipped with a 260-pound (118-kilogram) warhead, the JSM is not only designed for precision strikes but also for maximum impact against its targets.
