Kaan Aircraft Acquisition: Saudi Arabia Strengthens Air Force
Saudi Arabia has unveiled its plans to acquire around 100 Kaan all-weather combat aircraft from Turkey. This strategic move is part of the kingdom’s broader initiative to modernize its air force. The acquisition is intended to bolster Riyadh’s capabilities while it works towards the development of a sixth-generation fighter jet, expected to be operational by the 2040s.
According to a report by Hürriyet, a prominent news agency in Turkey, Saudi officials conveyed their interest to the Turkish defense ministry during a series of meetings held in Istanbul and Ankara in late December 2024. Discussions between the two nations also included topics such as warships, radar systems, and missile programs, indicating a deepening defense collaboration.
Collaboration on Sixth-Generation Fighter Development
This announcement follows Saudi Arabia’s earlier decision in 2023 to join forces with Italy, the UK, and Japan in a joint effort to develop a unified sixth-generation fighter. This collaborative project, known as the Global Air Combat Program (GCAP), aims to pool resources and expertise from the participating nations to innovate and enhance air combat capabilities.
In November 2024, the consortium revealed plans to include junior members, such as Saudi Arabia, to attract funding and broaden the market for a project that is anticipated to cost tens of billions of dollars. This initiative reflects a growing trend among nations to leverage partnerships for sophisticated military technology advancements.
Technological Innovations in Aircraft Design
First introduced in 2022, the Global Air Combat Program focuses on integrating cutting-edge air combat technology, ranging from stealth capabilities to advanced sensor systems. The goal is to develop a next-generation fighter jet that will meet the evolving demands of modern warfare by 2040.
The Kaan aircraft, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries, is set to replace the aging F-16 Fighting Falcons currently in use by Turkey. Having completed its maiden flight in February 2024, the Kaan is said to possess performance characteristics comparable to the American F-35, marking a significant leap in Turkey’s defense capabilities.
Specifications and Capabilities of the Kaan Aircraft
Measuring 21 meters (69 feet) in length and boasting a wingspan of 14 meters (46 feet), the Kaan is designed for versatility in combat scenarios. The aircraft can be outfitted with a variety of armaments, including air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, guided bombs, and mini-explosives, enhancing its operational flexibility.
In addition to its weaponry, the Kaan features advanced radar, targeting, and tracking systems, along with sophisticated electronic warfare capabilities. Powered by a twin General Electric turbofan engine, the aircraft can reach speeds of Mach 1.8 (2,223 kilometers/1,381 miles per hour) and operate at altitudes of up to 17,000 meters (55,775 feet), showcasing its prowess in modern aerial combat.
