Portugal Expands Military Airlift Capacity with KC-390 Acquisition
Portugal has announced its decision to acquire a sixth KC-390 Millennium aircraft from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. This move is part of the country’s efforts to modernize its heavy military air transportation capabilities. This new acquisition follows a significant agreement made in 2019, in which Lisbon partnered with Embraer to phase out the older C-130 Hercules cargo planes that have been in service with the Portuguese Air Force.
As part of this acquisition, Portugal is also looking to secure options for up to 10 additional KC-390 units. This strategy not only signifies Portugal’s commitment to enhancing its military efficiency, but it also strengthens its collaborative discussions with other NATO members and European partners. Currently, the Portuguese Air Force operates two KC-390s, with the first being delivered in 2022 and the second anticipated to join the fleet by 2024.
Embraer Welcomes Portugal’s Commitment
Bosco da Costa Jr., CEO and President of Embraer, expressed his enthusiasm regarding Portugal’s latest order, noting that this will be the first additional purchase of theKC-390 by an operator. He stated that this decision highlights the growing recognition of the aircraft’s quality and operational success. As interest in including additional options in the contract mounts, da Costa believes that this could encourage more Western nations to adopt the KC-390, leading to potential economic benefits for all operators involved.
This increasing interest aligns with efforts to bolster military cooperation among NATO allies, especially in the realm of advanced aerial logistics. The KC-390 has been well received, and further purchases by other nations could create robust synergies, broadening the aircraft’s operational network.
Specifications and Capabilities of the KC-390
The KC-390 Millennium, produced by Embraer, is a state-of-the-art military aircraft designed for versatility and efficiency. Measuring 35 meters (115 feet) in length, it has an impressive payload capacity of 26,000 kilograms (57,320 pounds), allowing it to transport up to 80 personnel or carry 35,000 kilograms (77,162 pounds) of fuel. These specifications position the aircraft as a capable player in heavy airlift operations.
Powered by twin IAE V2500-E5 turbofan engines, the KC-390 reaches speeds exceeding 500 knots (926 kilometers/575 miles per hour). It boasts a remarkable operational range of 4,570 nautical miles (8,464 kilometers/5,259 miles) and a service ceiling of 11,000 meters (36,089 feet). Furthermore, it can be equipped with advanced electronic warfare systems and self-defense capabilities, ensuring it is well-prepared for modern combat scenarios.
