UAE’s EDGE Group Secures Major Patrol Vessel Contract
The EDGE Group, a prominent defense company from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has finalized a significant contract worth $2.45 billion to supply Kuwait with eight Falaj-3 naval patrol vessels. This milestone agreement includes not only the design and construction of the vessels but also extends to sea trials, delivery, logistics, and ongoing support. EDGE CEO Hamad Al Marar emphasized the contract’s profound implications, stating it strengthens the long-term defense relationship between the two nations.
Al Marar highlighted that the introduction of these advanced vessels into regional operations is both valuable and essential. He remarked, “This is important for us as it deepens long-term defense ties between our nations, brings a proven class of advanced vessels into regional service, and reinforces EDGE’s position as a trusted international partner.” This partnership aligns with the evolving security needs of both countries.
Geopolitical Context and Previous Collaboration
Kuwait and the UAE, both strategically located in the Arabian Gulf, share membership in the Gulf Cooperation Council, facing similar maritime threats from destabilizing forces in the region. Last year, recognizing the need for enhanced naval capabilities, Kuwait partnered with the Emirati company for the reconstruction, repair, and upgrading of its existing naval vessels, as well as the training of its military personnel.
This collaboration not only highlights the pressing maritime security challenges but also underscores the commitment of both nations to fortify their defenses. By investing in advanced naval technology, Kuwait aims to bolster its capabilities to deter potential threats effectively.
Specifications and Capabilities of the Falaj-3
The Falaj-3 patrol vessels, with a length of 62.7 meters (205 feet), are engineered for stealth operations, making them suitable for both coastal and open water missions. This new class of vessels is poised to significantly enhance Kuwait’s naval deterrence and coastal defense strategies. Each vessel boasts a width of 9.5 meters (31 feet), a depth of 4.45 meters (14 feet), and a draft of 2.6 meters (8 feet), accommodating a crew of up to 39 personnel.
Designed based on Singapore’s Fearless-class patrol boats, the Falaj-3 is notable for its reduced radar cross-section and minimized infrared and acoustic signatures. It offers extensive protection against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats, further strengthening its operational capabilities.
Performance and Technological Features
The power behind the Falaj-3 is impressive, featuring four high-powered engines that drive four propellers, enabling the vessels to reach speeds exceeding 25 knots (approximately 46 kilometers or 28 miles per hour). With a range of 2,000 nautical miles (2,301 miles or 3,704 kilometers) when cruising at 16 knots, these vessels are built for long-range operations. Additionally, they are equipped with four generators providing 1.2 megawatts of power to support various onboard systems.
In terms of armament, the Falaj-3 comes with an advanced combat management system, decoy launchers, a rigid hull inflatable boat, and a variety of weaponry, including missiles, rockets, and medium-caliber guns. This allows the vessel to effectively carry out air, surface, and sub-surface warfare missions, reinforcing Kuwait’s operational readiness in diverse combat scenarios.
