In a recent development, Russian media has released a video featuring a cutting-edge laser air defense system manufactured in China, which is being utilized by Moscow to counter Ukrainian drones. This system, dubbed the Silent Hunter or Low Altitude Laser Defense System (LASS), demonstrates its efficiency through footage that depicts it successfully bringing down UAVs operated by Kyiv. The operation is being carried out by a specialized mobile air defense unit known as the Kochevnik special operations group.

The LASS showcased its capabilities by targeting two distinct types of drones: the Shchedryk-class reconnaissance drone, specifically the Skywalker X8, and a decoy drone labeled as Distractor. Reports from Militarnyi indicate that these drones were hit from impressive distances exceeding 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers), showcasing the system’s reach and precision. Furthermore, there are indications that Russia has been utilizing the LASS since October 2024, marking an extension of its military technology application.

Military Cooperation Amid Sanctions

Despite facing ongoing international sanctions, Russia continues to receive military support from China. Recent analyses point out that components supplied from Beijing have significantly contributed to enhancing certain missile technologies within the Russian arsenal. This collaboration underscores a strategic partnership that persists even in the face of geopolitical pressures.

The implications of this military cooperation are profound, as it indicates a robust supply line through which China supports Russia’s defense initiatives. Capabilities of the Silent Hunter

The Silent Hunter system, featuring advanced laser technology, is not only operated by Russia but is also in use by military forces in Iran and Saudi Arabia. This portable laser weapon is mounted on an SUV, strategically designed to locate, track, and eliminate low-flying drones in real time. Its impressive specifications highlight a power output between 30 to 100 kilowatts, enabling it to engage targets situated up to 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) away.

Moreover, the penetrating strength of the laser is notable, capable of piercing through multiple layers of steel from significant distances. Reports suggest that from half a mile (800 meters), it can penetrate five two-millimeter steel plates, or a single five-millimeter plate from 0.6 miles (1 kilometer), showcasing its formidable destructive capabilities and reliability in combat situations.
