Fincantieri’s subsidiary, Power4Future, has successfully concluded the final operational testing of its lithium-ion battery system (LBS) designed for the Italian Navy’s U212 Near Future Submarines (NFS). The testing took place at the Piedimonte San Germano facility, where key parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature were closely monitored throughout both charging and discharging phases. This comprehensive assessment focused on evaluating the battery’s safety, technological performance, and adaptability under challenging operational conditions.

According to a press release from the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation, the testing rigorously examined the LBS’s capabilities. Specifically, the Single String Converter (SSC) was directly connected to the modules string, allowing for an in-depth analysis of its performance during operational missions. By varying electrical loads during both usage and recharging phases, the tests verified how the SSC complex and string responded under maximum permitted levels.

The operational testing of the LBS was not only crucial for validating individual components but also for assessing the overall effectiveness of the battery monitoring system. The NFS fleet is anticipated to become operational by 2036, with the first three submarines expected to be commissioned in 2027, 2029, and 2032. Each vessel will measure 59 meters (193 feet) in length and will have a crew capacity of over 20 personnel.

The U212 NFS submarines are designed to incorporate advanced combat, command, and control systems, alongside long-range cruise missiles and torpedoes. These enhancements will enable them to conduct a variety of missions, including ensuring freedom of navigation, engaging in anti-piracy operations, protecting maritime infrastructure, combating terrorism, and participating in joint multinational operations.
