Lithuania Enhances Naval Capabilities with New Tugboat

Lithuania’s Ministry of Defence has officially introduced a Dutch-manufactured support tugboat into its naval fleet, stationed in Klaipėda. This significant addition was constructed by Damen Naval and features the innovative azimuth stern drive 3010 hull design, tailored for efficient harbor and port operations. The contract for the tugboat’s construction, valued at €10.8 million (approximately $12.1 million), was awarded in August 2024.

The newly commissioned vessel has been named “Lokys,” which translates to “bear” in Lithuanian, and is designated as “LNS H-24.” At the launch event, Vice Defence Minister Karolis Aleksa emphasized the vessel’s importance, stating, “The geographical positioning and significance for both economic and national security interests cannot be overstated, hence our commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the Lithuanian Navy. We recognize the existing threats and are actively developing maritime resources, with the H-24 tugboat as a tangible example of this effort.”

Specifications and Features of ‘Lokys’

The Lokys tugboat boasts impressive specifications, measuring 30 meters (98 feet) in length and weighing over 300 tons (272,155 kilograms). It is engineered for versatility and equipped with specialized modules for various missions, including rescue operations, maritime resource protection, and firefighting. Its design allows it to operate efficiently under a range of conditions.

With a crew complement of eight, the Lokys can navigate at speeds of up to 13 knots (approximately 24 kilometers or 15 miles per hour). This operational capability enhances Lithuania’s maritime presence and allows for rapid response in emergencies, showcasing the tugboat’s pivotal role in strengthening national defense initiatives.

The acquisition of the Lokys tugboat comes on the heels of Lithuania’s recent procurement of two multi-purpose attack craft from Finland, announced in April. These vessels are intended to bolster security along Lithuania’s coast and safeguard critical areas near the border with Russia.

Future Developments in Lithuania’s Naval Strategy

In addition to the new tugboat, Lithuania is advancing its naval capabilities with plans for the Thunder-class patrol boats, which were unveiled in January. These specialized vessels are being designed to undertake specific missions, focusing particularly on the protection of vital infrastructure and enhancing maritime security.

The strategic investments in naval assets not only aim to protect Lithuania’s waters but also reinforce its commitment to regional stability. As the geopolitical landscape evolves, these enhancements reflect a proactive approach to defense and readiness in the face of potential maritime threats.
