Lithuanian Armed Forces Night Combat Devices Unveiled
The Lithuanian Armed Forces have recently unveiled their first batch of night combat devices, marking a significant investment in enhancing the capabilities of their soldiers. This procurement, which amounts to 17 million euros (approximately $17.7 million), includes advanced BROLIS LP5X laser aiming devices and BPS14 night vision systems. The delivery of additional equipment is scheduled to continue throughout 2025, indicating a commitment to modernizing military operations.
The BROLIS LP5X is a lightweight and compact device designed for ambidextrous use. It operates on a single CR123A battery and features three operational modes: training (which is eye-safe), low, and high. Currently, this Lithuanian-made device is utilized in 23 countries, including four NATO forces. Additionally, the BPS14 night vision system has proven its effectiveness in combat, being actively used by both the Lithuanian and Ukrainian armed forces. This system boasts cutting-edge European high-FOM I2T technology and includes BROLIS laser illumination for enhanced performance.
Investment in Modern Soldier Equipment Program
In a broader effort to modernize its military, the Lithuanian government has announced plans to invest up to 1.2 billion euros (around $1.33 billion) into a phased Modern Soldier Equipment Program over the next decade. This initiative aims to upgrade not only weapons and equipment but also clothing for soldiers. According to Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas, an initial allocation of 30 million euros (approximately $33 million) has been set aside for the next two years, with the remainder of the funding distributed over the following eight years.
The ambitious goal of this program is to fully equip a total of 77,000 soldiers by the year 2030. This strategic investment reflects Lithuania’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and ensuring that its armed forces are well-equipped to meet contemporary challenges. The modernization efforts highlight the importance of maintaining a robust military presence in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
