Royal Navy Unveils Next-Generation Electronic Warfare System
The Royal Navy has marked a significant milestone with the unveiling of its next-generation electronic warfare system, the Maritime Electronic Warfare System Integrated Capability (MEWSIC). This advanced system has recently completed production and is now undergoing final tests and upgrades. MEWSIC is set to be installed on the illustrious Queen Elizabeth-class carriers, Type 45 destroyers, and the future Type 26 and 31 frigates. This ambitious project is spearheaded by Babcock in collaboration with Elbit Systems UK and QinetiQ, all part of a substantial 13-year, £100 million ($125 million) contract.
MEWSIC promises to enhance the Royal Navy’s operational capabilities significantly. By integrating state-of-the-art technology, the system aims to improve the Navy’s readiness against various threats, particularly anti-ship missiles. The UK Ministry of Defence’s Defence Equipment & Support has noted that the new electronic warfare technology will enable simultaneous detection and identification of radar signals across a broader frequency spectrum, outperforming current systems and facilitating better operational decision-making.

Each Type 26, 31, and 45 warship will be equipped with a pair of Ancilia decoys, which are set to replace the existing Seagnat system. The Royal Navy has highlighted the significance of integrating Ancilia with MEWSIC’s Electromagnetic Warfare Command and Control capabilities. This advancement facilitates the automatic fusion of detected electromagnetic emissions with real-time tactical information, greatly enhancing situational awareness for operations teams.
