Innovative Solution for Heat Stress

Cryogenx, a London-based medical technology startup, has successfully raised 1.9 million euros, or approximately $2.2 million, in seed funding to fast-track the development of its unique cooling solution aimed at reducing heat stress among military personnel. Central to this initiative is the CGX1, a product that effectively mimics the effects of an ice bath in a portable format, providing critical treatment for heat-related illnesses like heatstroke, which occurs when the body temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

The CGX1 is not just a theoretical innovation; it comprises a wearable device equipped with conductive cooling pads. These pads are activated with coolant kept in small canisters, enabling rapid cooling in even the most challenging conditions. Weighing only 5 kilograms (11 pounds), the device can be deployed in under two minutes once a heat-related diagnosis has been made, requiring no complex setup. Its compact design allows it to fit effortlessly into standard emergency vehicle compartments, and the gas tanks used are fully recyclable, emphasizing sustainability in its use.

Responding to a Growing Threat

In an interview with Startups Magazine, Matt Anderson, CEO and Founder of Cryogenx, highlighted the seriousness of heatstroke as a global health threat. “Heatstroke isn’t just a localized risk; it’s a growing global challenge—current solutions are inadequate to address it effectively,” he stated. The CGX1 has been designed to function as a defibrillator for heatstroke, empowering frontline responders and military personnel to treat heat-related conditions efficiently, regardless of their location.

The recent funding package includes a significant investment of 495,000 euros from the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund, a public investment body. This financial boost will facilitate the process of obtaining FDA clearance for the CGX1, scale up manufacturing operations, and assist in the rollout of international sales. In addition to the core model, the company is exploring lighter and modular variations of the CGX1, aligning with a subscription-based revenue model.

Military and Civilian Applications

Once regulatory approval is secured, this state-of-the-art technology will be made available to both the UK Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defense. Beyond military applications, Cryogenx aims to market the CGX1 to civilian sectors where workers are at risk of heat stress, such as construction, energy, mining, emergency services, and sports. This broad applicability underscores the potential of the CGX1 to be a game changer in heat stress management.

Alex Leigh, investment director at UKI2S, expressed enthusiasm for Cryogenx’s innovative approach, stating, “This is precisely the kind of innovation we seek in our security and defense investments.” He emphasized that Cryogenx is addressing a critical global challenge with a solution that could redefine the prevention and management of heat-related injuries across various industries, marking a significant milestone in operational safety and resilience.
