Milrem Unveils THeMIS UGV: A Step Forward in Counter-Drone Solutions
Estonian manufacturer Milrem Robotics showcased an innovative version of its unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), the Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System (THeMIS), during the Indo Defence 2025 forum in Jakarta, Indonesia. The newly configured UGV features expanded cargo space and is equipped with a Valhalla-made Loki remote-controlled weapon station. This event, held from June 11 to 14, provided attendees an exclusive first look at the advanced capabilities of the THeMIS.
This modular configuration marks a significant evolution in Milrem’s approach to enhancing combat effectiveness. The UGV supports remote threat identification, direct fire capabilities, and, notably, counter-drone functionality, which aligns with the company’s vision of a “Forward Line of Robotics”. This technology aims to improve troop survivability in high-threat combat scenarios, ensuring military units remain agile and responsive.
Strategic Importance of Robotic Systems in Combat
Patrick Shepherd, Milrem’s Chief Sales Officer, emphasized the critical role of robotic systems within modern military formations. He articulated that integrating systems like the THeMIS can dramatically enhance the operational effectiveness of combat units. By leveraging unmanned systems, military forces can extend their capabilities while operating with fewer resources, ultimately allowing troops greater protection on the battlefield.
The emphasis on operational efficiency is crucial, especially in contemporary warfare, where threats are both complex and varied. The THeMIS UGV’s capabilities enable commanders to deploy resources strategically while minimizing risks to personnel, making it a vital asset in the ever-evolving landscape of military engagements.
Introducing the Loki Counter-Drone Turret
The Loki turret is a remarkable addition to the THeMIS platform. It is designed to support a wide range of ammunition, from 5.56mm to 12.7mm calibers, and boasts an impressive engagement range of up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). Beyond traditional weaponry, the turret has been adapted for counter-drone operations, showcasing its versatility in today’s battlefield scenarios.
The combination of Loki’s advanced operational capabilities with THeMIS’s substantial payload capacity presents a new frontier for military logistics. Operators can seamlessly integrate various supplies, sensors, and mission-specific equipment, thereby alleviating the logistical and cognitive stresses currently faced by combat troops.
Strategic Expansion in Southeast Asia
Milrem’s participation in significant defense exhibitions in Southeast Asia signals a strategic move to broaden its market reach. As the company sets its sights beyond the established markets of the US and Europe, Indonesia stands out as a potential hub due to its recent joint drone manufacturing agreement with Turkey, established in February.
Additionally, Malaysia is positioning itself as an innovator in the drone sector with its forthcoming event, DronTech Asia 2025. These developments highlight the region’s growing importance in global defense, suggesting that Milrem is keen to capitalize on emerging opportunities within Southeast Asia.
