RAF Successfully Tests MQ-9B Protector Drone
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) has marked a significant milestone by successfully conducting flight tests of its MQ-9B Protector drone. These tests were carried out from the Waddington base in Lincolnshire, located on the east coast of the UK, which will play a pivotal role in future operations and exercises.
The Waddington base is not only crucial for these tests but is also set to facilitate international training initiatives under NATO’s framework. This strategic location allows for enhanced collaboration and interoperability among allied nations.
Transitioning to the MQ-9B Protector
As part of a broader modernization effort, the UK is set to replace its fleet of Reaper MQ-9As with 16 advanced MQ-9B Protectors. This transition is expected to bolster the RAF’s operational capabilities significantly.
The initial flight test of the MQ-9B took place in 2023, showcasing the aircraft’s potential. During this test, a human operator controlled the drone from a ground-based cockpit, demonstrating the effectiveness of remote operations.
Advanced Features of the Protector Drone
The MQ-9B Protector, developed by General Atomics, is an advanced unmanned aerial vehicle engineered for extended missions lasting over 30 hours. Its capabilities are diverse, encompassing close air support and disaster response operations.
Upon becoming fully operational, the Protector is poised to play a vital role in the UK’s defense strategy, particularly in intelligence gathering, surveillance, target acquisition, and strike missions.
Specifications and Capabilities
Measuring 37.5 feet (11.43 meters) in length with a wingspan of 79 feet (24 meters), the Protector has a maximum takeoff weight of 12,500 pounds (5,669 kilograms). The drone is equipped with automatic takeoff and landing features, enhancing its operational efficiency.
Additionally, the Protector boasts an advanced sensor suite that includes high-definition electro-optical and infrared cameras, allowing for superior situational awareness.
