Multirole Missiles for Ukraine: UK Supports Defense Strategies
The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded a significant contract to Thales for the production of over 5,000 lightweight multirole missiles (LMMs) destined for Ukraine. Valued at £1.6 billion ($2 billion), this initiative underscores London’s ongoing commitment to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities against Russian aggression, which has persisted since the onset of the conflict in 2022.
Each multirole missile will weigh in at 13 kilograms (27 pounds) and boast a remarkable range of over 6 kilometers (4 miles), achieving speeds that surpass Mach 1.5 (1,852 kilometers or 1,150 miles per hour). This new procurement will complement a previous contract from September 2024, which includes approximately 650 air defense missiles for Ukraine, expected to be delivered by the end of this year. Production will take place at Thales’ facility located in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
A Critical Moment for Ukraine
Reflecting on the ongoing conflict, UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the urgency of the situation. “Three years since Putin launched his full-scale invasion, we are now at a critical moment for the future of Ukraine and the security of all of us in Europe,” he remarked. The new missile support is intended to enhance Ukraine’s defenses against drone and missile threats, while also acting as a deterrent to further Russian advances.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed his steadfast support for Ukraine, stating, “My support for Ukraine is unwavering. I am determined to find a way forward that brings an end to Russia’s illegal war and guarantees Ukraine a lasting peace based on sovereignty and security.” He expressed confidence that through collective efforts and collaboration with international partners, a sustainable peace deal could be achieved.
Economic and Employment Impact
This latest military aid package is expected to generate significant economic benefits, creating around 200 new jobs within the local industrial sector and supporting 700 existing positions in Belfast. The initiative not only strengthens defense ties but also provides a much-needed boost to the UK’s industrial base amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Additionally, the funding aligns with the British government’s broader commitment to increase defense spending to 2.5 percent of its gross domestic product by 2027. This effort is part of a collaborative project between the UK and Ukraine, known as “Task Force Hirst,” aimed at enhancing industrial relations and allowing Ukraine to tap into £3.5 billion ($4.4 billion) for the development of complex weapons and land systems.

UK National Armaments Director Andy Start highlighted the importance of this contract in supporting Ukraine’s defense needs. He noted, “The UK’s Defence Industry has supported Ukraine from the start of the war, and this important contract underlines the industry’s ability to scale up production quickly to deliver the world-class defense equipment Ukraine requires.” This initiative represents a crucial advancement in the partnership between the UK and Ukraine’s defense sectors.
The increase in LMM production capacity is not only vital for Ukraine’s immediate defense efforts but also plays a significant role in enhancing the long-term security of the UK.
