Airbus Unveils NH90 Caïman Standard 2 Helicopter

Airbus has officially unveiled the prototype of the NH90 Caïman Standard 2 multirole helicopter during an international exhibition focused on special operations in Martignas-sur-Jalle, France. This unveiling is a key milestone in Paris’ initiative to integrate advanced capabilities into military units which are responsible for missions spanning extraction, fire support, and rapid deployment tasks that necessitate operations in low-visibility conditions.

The NH90 Caïman Standard 2 introduces significant enhancements over its predecessor, the Caïman Standard 1, which was delivered to the French Army just last February. Key upgrades for the Standard 2 model include advanced components designed for covert operations. These features encompass an infrared camera equipped with a laser pointer and designator, along with an upgraded radio communications system and an array of new weapon systems.

Fleet Expansion for French Special Forces

As part of a contract with the French Army, Airbus is set to produce a total of 18 Caïman Standard 2 helicopters for the 4th Special Forces Helicopter Regiment located in Pau. Currently, the assembly of these helicopters is taking place at the Airbus facility in Marignane, with first deliveries anticipated between 2026 and 2029. These state-of-the-art helicopters will replace the regiment’s aging H215M Cougar and H225M Caracal helicopters, which are also products of Airbus.

This strategic upgrade will modernize the fleet of the French commandos, enabling them to carry out their missions more effectively. The introduction of the Standard 2 model reflects the commitment of the French military to enhance their operational capabilities with cutting-edge technology.

Capabilities and Specifications of the Caïman

The NH90 Caïman boasts impressive versatility, being capable of carrying a variety of armaments including door-mounted machine guns, multi-domain missiles, rocket pods, and support cannons. The aircraft measures 20 meters (66 feet) in length, with a rotor diameter of 16 meters (52 feet), and has an external slung load capacity of up to 4,200 kilograms (9,259 pounds). It is designed to accommodate 20 troops or can be configured to carry up to 10 medical evacuation stretchers.

Powering the NH90 are twin turboshaft engines that generate an impressive 2,400 horsepower each. This helicopter achieves a remarkable operational range of 1,600 kilometers (994 miles), can reach operational altitudes of up to 3,500 meters (11,483 feet), and has a maximum speed of 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour. Such specifications underscore the NH90 Caïman’s position as a formidable asset in modern military aviation.
