NH90 Caïman Tactical Transport Helicopter: Final Delivery
France has officially received the last NH90 Caïman Tactical Transport Helicopter from Airbus, concluding a significant rotorcraft fleet expansion initiative for its army. This milestone delivery completes a series of shipments that began in 2011, aimed at fulfilling the French Army’s requirement for a total of 63 NH90 helicopters configured in a specialized ‘Standard 1’ format, which boasts enhanced logistics capabilities.
Following this final delivery, the French Army is set to receive an additional 18 NH90 helicopters in a more advanced ‘Standard 2’ version, expected to arrive between 2026 and 2029. This upcoming batch will be specifically designed for special operations forces, featuring larger components and increased crew capacity to facilitate improved personnel deployment and extraction.
Transition to Modern Aircraft
The NH90 Caïman program is a strategic move aimed at gradually phasing out the aging Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma helicopters, which have been operational since the late 1960s. This transition reflects France’s commitment to modernizing its military capabilities and ensuring that its forces are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Technical Specifications of the NH90 Caïman
The NH90 Caïman measures 20 meters (66 feet) in length, with a rotor diameter of 16 meters (52 feet). It is powered by two robust turboshaft engines, each generating up to 2,400 horsepower. This impressive power allows the helicopter to carry a variety of loads, including up to 20 seated soldiers, 10 medical evacuation stretchers, or more than 4,000 kilograms (8,818 pounds) of external payload.
The helicopter is capable of flying at speeds of up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour and has an operational range of 1,600 kilometers (994 miles), with a service ceiling of 3,500 meters (11,483 feet). For combat scenarios, the NH90 Caïman can be equipped with various armaments, including door-mounted machine guns, a 20-millimeter cannon pod, rocket pods, and multi-domain missiles.
