Kongsberg and Thales Forge Joint Venture for Advanced Communication Systems
Kongsberg and Thales have officially announced their collaborative venture in Norway, aiming to innovate advanced communication systems. This joint initiative is crafted to meet the increasing demand for connectivity and interoperability within Norway’s armed forces and their NATO allies. By combining Thales’ capabilities in encrypted networks and secure voice systems with Kongsberg’s expertise in tactical radios and battlefield communications, the partnership aims to enhance the functionality of existing defense mechanisms, including the Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System.
The new venture is projected to create approximately 350 jobs across Norway, with planned offices in key locations such as Oslo, Trondheim, and Asker. Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, commented on the collaboration, stating, “Together, we can develop and maintain a wider and more robust product portfolio, establishing a reliable partner for Norwegian customers while enhancing access to international markets through Thales’ extensive distribution network.”
Strengthening NATO Partnerships Through Innovation
The establishment of this joint venture is set to bolster cooperation between Kongsberg and Thales, creating a formidable entity in secure communications that supports collaboration between Norway and France. Christophe Salomon, Executive Vice President of Thales’ Secure Communications & Information Systems, highlighted the significance of this partnership, suggesting that it would allow both companies to exploit synergies effectively. “Through this jointly owned company, we will enhance collaboration and exploit synergies between Kongsberg and Thales,” Salomon stated.
This venture comes at a crucial time, as the defense companies reported a collective revenue of 1.5 billion Norwegian kroner ($148 million) in 2024. Both firms anticipate a steady growth trajectory, targeting revenues of 3 billion kroner ($297 million) by 2030. This ambitious goal is anchored in the increasing global demand for advanced communication solutions and opportunities for integrating innovative products.
Norway’s Response to Growing Security Concerns
In light of rising regional tensions, Norway is taking significant steps to fortify its national security infrastructure. Earlier this year, intelligence reports indicated that Russia is “likely” planning sabotage operations, which could potentially target critical energy infrastructures or military assistance intended for Ukraine. In response, Norway has revisited Cold War-era policies, suggesting the mandatory construction of air raid shelters in new buildings as a precautionary measure against potential conflicts.
This initiative is part of a broader national security strategy aimed at enhancing civilian defense capabilities and bolstering cybersecurity measures. With these developments, Norway is demonstrating a proactive stance in ensuring its defense readiness and resilience against emerging threats.
