Thyssenkrupp and Ulstein Join Forces for Norwegian Navy Frigate Bid

Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Norway’s Ulstein Verft have entered into a strategic partnership to pursue a bid for the construction of the Royal Norwegian Navy’s new generation of frigates. The Navy is set to acquire five to six advanced vessels to replace its aging Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates, which are specifically designed for anti-submarine warfare and are equipped with eight Naval Strike Missiles. This initiative is part of the Navy’s 2024 Fleet Plan, which outlines the need for modernized naval capabilities.

The bidding process includes a variety of competitive candidates, such as the British Type 26, the German F127, the American Constellation class, and the French FDI. These vessels represent cutting-edge technology and capabilities that align with the Norwegian Navy’s strategic goals. If successful, Thyssenkrupp and Ulstein’s collaboration could significantly benefit the local Norwegian economy by conducting a large portion of the construction within the country.

Impact on Local Economy and Industry Expertise

In highlighting their combined strengths, Ulstein Verft Managing Director Lars Lühr Olsen remarked, “Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has a longstanding tradition of designing and constructing naval vessels, while Ulstein brings extensive experience in crafting commercial ships, characterized by innovative designs and solutions tailored for demanding marine operations.” This partnership not only leverages Thyssenkrupp’s naval expertise but also utilizes Ulstein’s reputation for pioneering marine design.

Both companies possess a rich industrial heritage within the shipbuilding sector, recognized for delivering complex, outfitting-intensive vessels. The collaboration aims to enhance Norway’s naval capabilities while fortifying the local shipbuilding industry, thus creating job opportunities and boosting economic growth.

Approval of Thyssenkrupp’s F127 Frigate

In a related development, Thyssenkrupp’s F127 frigate has received formal procurement approval from the German Navy. This class of frigate will be based on Thyssenkrupp’s innovative MEKO A-400 Air & Missile Defense warship concept, potentially integrating advanced systems such as the AEGIS combat management system. The F127 is anticipated to begin replacing the existing F124 Sachsen-class vessels by the early 2030s.

The introduction of the F127 frigate marks a significant advancement in the German Navy’s capabilities, enhancing their operational effectiveness with state-of-the-art technology. Thyssenkrupp’s ability to secure contracts both in Germany and Norway indicates a growing reputation in the global defense market.
