Enhancing Maritime Security: Montenegro’s New Patrol Vessels
French defense contractor Kership has commenced the assembly of two offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the Montenegrin Navy in Lorient, marking a significant development in the country’s defense capabilities. This initiative stems from a contract signed in 2024, which has set the stage for a modern fleet that will bolster Montenegro’s maritime enforcement.
The OPVs will be based on the advanced OPV 60M design created by Kership in Concarneau. Specifically tailored for maritime law enforcement and extensive defense missions, these vessels promise to enhance Montenegro’s ability to secure its territorial waters effectively. Additionally, they are expected to improve the nation’s participation in multinational military operations, combat trafficking, illegal migration, and fulfill NATO obligations while addressing a variety of regional security challenges.
Strategic Partnership with France
Kership, alongside the French Ministry of Defence, is set to deliver these sophisticated ships to Montenegro by 2026. This partnership underscores Montenegro’s strategic alignment with France, which boasts one of the most advanced defense systems in Europe. Defense Minister Dragan Krapović emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting it reflects Montenegro’s commitment towards a Euro-Atlantic orientation, strengthening ties with critical allies.
Dr. Krapović stated, “Our decision to collaborate with France on this project aligns with our efforts to enhance our defense capabilities and strengthens our strategic partnerships. This initiative will ensure that Montenegro can effectively contribute to regional stability and security, marking a pivotal shift in our defense strategy.”
Technical Specifications of OPV 60M
The OPV 60M design stands at an impressive 62 meters (203 feet) in length and is designed to accommodate a crew of up to 40 sailors. It features state-of-the-art twin electric diesel engines and twin fixed pitch propellers, enabling it to achieve a maximum speed of 21 knots (39 kilometers/24 miles per hour). Furthermore, the vessel boasts an extensive operational range of approximately 9,700 nautical miles (17,964 kilometers/11,163 miles).
The design of the OPV allows for significant versatility, including space for rigid hull inflatable boats and an unmanned aerial system. Additionally, it comes equipped with standard 20-foot (6-meter) logistics containers and crane arms capable of lifting 7.5 tons (6,804 kilograms). The vessel is also armed with a remote-operated weapon station, along with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, a naval gun, and machine guns, ensuring it is well-prepared for various mission types.
