Orikhovo-Vasylivka: A Strategic Capture

On Sunday, Russia announced a significant development in its ongoing military campaign in Ukraine, declaring the capture of the eastern village of Orikhovo-Vasylivka. This village is strategically located near Chasiv Yar, a crucial military hub that Russian forces are eager to seize. Intense fighting has been reported in Chasiv Yar, which remains one of the last urban strongholds obstructing Russia’s advance in the region.

The Russian defense ministry, in its daily briefing, highlighted the achievement, stating that “as a result of decisive attack actions, the Southern group of troops liberated the settlement of Orekhovo-Vasilevka in the Donetsk region.” This new development places Orikhovo-Vasylivka just 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Chasiv Yar, and near a key route leading to Sloviansk, a city currently under Ukrainian control.

Ongoing Clashes and Disputed Control

This recent military advance is part of a broader push by Russian troops deeper into the Donetsk region. Just days before the announcement, Russian forces claimed to have taken control of the vital mining town of Toretsk. However, Ukrainian officials quickly contested this claim, asserting that Russian forces do not have full control of the area.

In response to the escalating conflict, Ukraine’s Khortytsia army unit reported on Sunday that it had successfully repelled multiple attacks in both Chasiv Yar and Toretsk. Additionally, they claimed to have downed a Russian military jet near Toretsk, showcasing ongoing resistance against Russian advances.

Increased Drone Activity and Air Strikes

The airspace over Ukraine has also seen increased activity, with the Ukrainian air force reporting that Russia launched a drone attack on six regions overnight, deploying 151 drones. Ukrainian defenses intercepted 70 of these drones, while 74 others were reported to have been lost without causing significant harm.

In a counterclaim, Russia’s defense ministry stated it had destroyed 35 Ukrainian drones during the same timeframe, including one in the northwestern Leningrad region on Sunday morning. This exchange highlights the ongoing aerial combat between the two nations, further escalating tensions in the region.
