Otokar Cobra II: New Military Production Hub in Romania
Turkish defense contractor Otokar has officially launched its subsidiary in Romania, marking a strategic move to enhance military vehicle production for the Balkan government. This step comes on the heels of a substantial contract valued at approximately $930 million, which Otokar secured for the production of its renowned Cobra II armored tactical vehicle intended for the Romanian Land Forces. The contract, signed in October 2024, entails the delivery of 1,059 units of the four-wheel drive platform across various models, including the base version and eight additional variants.
According to the agreement’s stipulations, 278 Cobra II vehicles will be manufactured in Turkey, while the majority will be produced locally in Romania in collaboration with Romtehnica, a Bucharest-based automotive company. Romanian media outlet Economedia reported on Otokar’s commitment to bolstering local operations and emphasizing the value added through domestic production. The Otokar Cobra II is a formidable piece of engineering, weighing in at 14,500 kilograms (31,967 pounds) and measuring 6 meters (20 feet) in length.
