Pakistan Navy Acquires Refurbished Hovercraft from the UK
The Pakistan Navy has officially enhanced its operational capabilities with the recent purchase of three refurbished hovercraft from the United Kingdom. These Landing Craft Air Cushion (Light) hovercraft, previously utilized by the Royal Marines, were decommissioned in 2021 and underwent a thorough refurbishment in 2022, conducted by Griffon Marine Support, a specialized company in the UK. The transaction was executed through the UK’s Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) agency, highlighting a strong commitment to defense collaboration between the nations.
The deal, which encompasses essential spare parts for the hovercraft, was finalized by the DE&S Exports and Sales Team, dedicated to the disposal of surplus defense equipment. Commodore Richard Whalley, the head of Exports and Sales at DE&S, remarked on the importance of this sale, noting that it fortifies the longstanding defense ties with Pakistan and underscores a mutual goal of enhancing global security while benefiting the UK’s defense budget.
Enhanced Capabilities for Coastal Operations
The recently acquired hovercraft will significantly bolster the Pakistan Navy’s operational effectiveness, particularly in shallow-water and coastal environments. Designed for versatility, the LCAC(L) hovercraft can transport troops, vehicles, and crucial supplies swiftly from maritime vessels to shore. Its capability to operate on both land and water positions it as a reliable asset for various missions including coastal surveillance, humanitarian outreach, and rapid-response operations.
Given Pakistan’s extensive 1,046-kilometer coastline, the urgency for mobile platforms capable of quick reaction—such as maritime patrols and emergency assistance—becomes apparent. A spokesperson from the Pakistan Navy emphasized the value of defense cooperation with the UK, reflected in collaborative training exercises, acquisitions, and significant improvements to maritime security. The addition of these hovercraft is expected to notably enhance their capabilities, particularly in areas related to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.
