Babcock and Patria Unite to Supply Patria 6×6 to UK Forces

Babcock International and Patria have entered a significant agreement to jointly supply the Patria 6×6 Armored Personnel Carrier to the UK Armed Forces. This advanced vehicle is already in use by Finland, Latvia, and Sweden as part of the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System project. Furthermore, it is being considered by Germany as a replacement for its aging Fuchs personnel carriers.

Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding, Patria will spearhead the design and development of the vehicle, making tailored enhancements to the existing model. Babcock, headquartered in London, will manage the construction aspects and develop a comprehensive support package to ensure the vehicle’s operational readiness throughout its service life.

Expert Insights on the Partnership

Tom Newman, CEO of Babcock’s Land Sector, expressed confidence in the collaboration, stating, “The partnership between Patria and Babcock offers the UK Armed Forces the highest performing in-service armored personnel carrier.” He emphasized that Babcock’s skilled workforce and innovative facilities align with the ethos of the UK Land Industrial Strategy, ensuring that British troops are well-equipped for future missions.

Newman further highlighted the importance of combining British and Finnish engineering expertise, stating that this collaboration will significantly enhance the capabilities of the British Army.

Key Features of the Patria 6×6 Vehicle

The Patria 6×6 boasts a modular design, allowing for a variety of configurations tailored to different missions such as troop transport and combat support. It is equipped with STANAG level 2 ballistic and mine protection, which can be upgraded to level 4 in various configurations. The vehicle’s independent suspension system and high-performance driveline contribute to improved mobility and comfort for the crew.

Designed to accommodate up to ten soldiers in the rear, along with a crew of two—driver and commander—in the front cabin, the vehicle also has ample space for equipment and supplies required for missions lasting up to 72 hours.

Advanced Mobility and Amphibious Capabilities

In addition to its impressive transport capabilities, the Patria 6×6 features all-wheel drive, double front axle steering, and is designed for amphibious operations, enabling it to navigate water crossings and perform land operations in wet conditions.

Hugo Vanbockryck, Senior Vice President of Patria’s Market Area, remarked on the necessity of collaborative approaches in Europe, stating, “Europe requires collaboration and joint procurement, and the UK urgently needs a cost-effective, fully developed, off-the-shelf vehicle platform.” He noted that the Patria 6×6 is already in production and deployed by NATO partner nations, reinforcing its readiness to meet the high demands of the British Army.
