Fincantieri to Construct New Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura Ships for Italian Navy

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has officially secured a contract to construct two additional Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (PPA) multipurpose combat ships for the Italian Navy. This deal, valued at approximately 700 million euros (around $810 million), represents a shift in intent as these vessels will now replace two units initially designated for the Indonesian Navy.

The contract, which encompasses ongoing work on the ships initially intended for Indonesia, will be administered by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation. Within this framework, Fincantieri will act as the primary contractor while Leonardo will partner in the project. The delivery of these ships is anticipated in a ‘light plus’ configuration, scheduled for 2029 and 2030.

Construction Details and Strategic Importance

Construction of the new combat ships will take place at Fincantieri’s advanced shipyard facilities located in Riva Trigoso and Muggiano. Pierroberto Folgiero, Fincantieri’s CEO and Managing Director, highlighted the significance of this contract, noting, “This contract underscores the strategic importance of the PPA program, showcasing our Group’s capability to respond efficiently to the Italian Navy’s operational requirements.” He further emphasized the contract’s impact on bolstering the national supply chain.

Folgerio also pointed out that this collaboration promotes job stability within Italy’s defense sector and fortifies the nation’s position as a pivotal player in the evolving global defense landscape, where shipbuilding remains integral to international influence and cooperation.

Replacing Older Naval Vessels

The new Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura ships aim to replace the aging fleet of four Soldati-class light patrol frigates and eight Minerva-class corvettes. To date, the Italian Navy has welcomed a total of four PPA vessels into its ranks, marking a significant upgrade in its maritime capabilities.

Each PPA ship measures 143 meters (469 feet) in length and boasts a top speed of 31 knots (57.4 kilometers per hour / 36 miles per hour). Designed for a crew of 171, these vessels incorporate a hybrid propulsion system that includes both diesel and gas turbines along with an electric propulsion option.

Versatile Mission Capabilities

The PPA vessels are characterized by their versatility, capable of executing a variety of missions including sea rescue operations, civil protection tasks, and serving in a frontline combat role. This adaptability is one of the program’s defining features, allowing for the gradual incorporation of advanced capabilities as the vessels evolve.

The design includes provisions for self-defense features in the patrol version, while the full version will offer comprehensive defense capabilities. This ensures that the Italian Navy can meet various operational demands as they arise, providing a robust maritime response.
