Philoctetes Armored Vehicle: KNDS and Metlen Team Up
In a significant development for military collaborations, French defense company KNDS has announced a partnership with Metlen Energy & Metals based in Athens. Together, they will produce the Philoctetes armored infantry fighting vehicle (VBCI) for the Hellenic Army. This agreement is part of a broader initiative revealed in 2022 to establish a next-generation armored fleet in Greece, inspired by the existing 8×8 VBCI system utilized by the French Armed Forces.
This collaboration marks a pivotal moment as KNDS will share its expertise in aluminum armor and the manufacturing processes associated with the VBCI Mark 2 structure. The knowledge transfer aims to enhance the industrial cooperation between France and Greece. Both countries are eager to meet the production demands of the Hellenic military and address potential markets across Europe.
A Boost to Greek Defense Manufacturing
Metlen is set to utilize its well-established metal construction facility located in Volos to further support the Philoctetes program. This site has been integral to the industrial landscape of Greece since the 1960s and will soon expand its capabilities. Starting in 2026, Metlen plans to introduce a new advanced metal structures production unit along with two additional centers.
As part of its legacy, the Volos facility has previously undertaken major projects, including the shielding welding of the Leopard 2 main battle tanks manufactured by KNDS Germany. The collaboration between the two companies is poised to enhance Greece’s defense infrastructure and contribute to broader European security initiatives. “This partnership is a critical step for enhancing Greece’s and Europe’s defense readiness, while also fortifying industrial capabilities that support the region’s strategic autonomy for years to come,” stated officials from the KNDS-Metlen team.
Features of the VBCI System
The Philoctetes armored vehicle, based on the established VBCI system, is designed to be a formidable asset for the Hellenic Army. The standard VBCI model measures an impressive 8 meters (26 feet) in length and boasts a seating capacity for up to nine passengers. Its armor is engineered to withstand attacks from 14.5-millimeter shells, ensuring a robust defense for its crew.
Under the hood, the vehicle is powered by a Renault Diesel engine, generating 550 horsepower and enabling it to cover a range of 750 kilometers (466 miles) at a maximum speed of 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour. The Philoctetes is not just about strength; it is also armed with advanced weaponry, including a 25-millimeter autocannon, a 7.62-millimeter machine gun, and anti-tank missiles. Various configurations of the VBCI are available, including options for command and control, medical evacuation, and recovery, making it a versatile tool on the battlefield.
