Babcock Secures Major Training Aircraft Contract for France

Babcock has officially signed a significant contract to deliver Pilatus PC-7 MKX training aircraft to both the French Air and Space Force and the French Navy. This substantial deal, valued at 795 million euros (approximately $827.9 million), encompasses the supply of 22 advanced low-wing aircraft, complete with essential support services, infrastructure components, and pilot equipment.

The new fleet of PC-7 MKX aircraft is set to be based at Salon-de-Provence Air Base in southern France. Here, military trainees will undergo fundamental flight instruction before advancing to specialized roles as fighter and transport pilots. Additionally, Babcock will provide 12 training simulators, which will enhance the preparatory experience for the students alongside their practical training with the aircraft.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The execution of this contract is projected to create over 100 jobs within the engineering, technical, administrative, and project management sectors across the Salon-de-Provence and Le Cannet-des-Maures regions. This initiative not only strengthens the capabilities of the French military but also contributes positively to the local economy by fostering employment opportunities.

Once operational, the new fleet of PC-7 MKX planes is expected to facilitate around 11,000 flight hours and 6,500 training hours annually for approximately 120 students. This robust training schedule underscores the importance of the aircraft in preparing future military pilots.

Supporting National and International Security

Pierre Basquin, CEO of Babcock France, emphasized the critical role that the French Air and Space Force and the French Navy play in ensuring national and international security. “We are delighted to support our customers with their air-based training requirements, further enabling them to focus on delivering critical military aviation needs,” Basquin stated, highlighting the company’s commitment to enhancing France’s defense capabilities.

Babcock is also involved in a related contract aimed at bolstering the French Air and Space Force’s pilot training at Cognac-Châteaubernard Air Base, utilizing 26 Pilatus PC-21 aircraft. Furthermore, in December, the company expanded its training resources by acquiring 11 L-39 Albatros aircraft, reinforcing its commitment to developing skilled aircrews in France.

Technical Specifications of the PC-7 MKX

The PC-7 MKX training aircraft measures 34 feet (10 meters) in length and is powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-25C engine, delivering an impressive 700 horsepower. This aircraft is designed with multiple advanced features, including various flight displays, traffic advisory systems, autopilot capabilities, a cockpit camera, a debriefing system, and diverse flight modes, all of which contribute to comprehensive pilot training.

With a maximum speed of 300 knots (556 kilometers/345 miles) and a range of 1,800 nautical miles (3,334 kilometers/2,071 miles), the PC-7 MKX is equipped to meet the demanding requirements of military pilot training. Additionally, it boasts a service ceiling of 25,000 feet (7,260 meters), ensuring it can effectively simulate various flying conditions and scenarios for students.
