PKK Announces Ceasefire Following Ocalan’s Appeal
In a significant development, the outlawed Kurdish militants known as the PKK declared a ceasefire with Turkey on Saturday. This announcement comes in response to an urgent appeal from Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the PKK, who called for the group to disband and end its decades-long armed struggle. This marks the first official response from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party to Ocalan’s recent call for dissolution and disarmament.
The PKK’s executive committee, in a statement reported by the pro-PKK news agency ANF, emphasized their commitment to Ocalan’s vision for peace and a democratic society. They announced, “To pave the way for implementing leader Apo’s call for peace and a democratic society, we are declaring a ceasefire effective today.” The committee further asserted that their forces would refrain from armed actions unless provoked.
