Poland Enhances Naval Capabilities with Ratownik Rescue Ship
Poland’s state-run Armaments Group (PGZ) has officially entered into a contract to develop the Ratownik (Lifeguard) rescue ship, a crucial addition aimed at bolstering the Polish Navy’s future submarine operations. This significant announcement was made at the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia, aligning with Warsaw’s strategic initiative to expand its military naval fleet by the end of the decade.
The Ratownik vessel is set to complement the upcoming Miecznik (Swordfish) frigates and Kormoran II (Cormorant) minehunters, creating a more robust naval presence. Construction of this ambitious project, valued at 1 billion Polish złoty (approximately $241 million), is scheduled to commence in 2025 and conclude in 2029.
Commitment to Modernization and Security
Marcin Ryngwelski, President of the PGZ Naval Shipyard Management Board, expressed strong commitment to the Polish Navy, stating, “Our team of specialists is fully prepared to carry out this investment, integrating the latest technologies with our many years of experience.” This statement underscores the shipyard’s dedication to modernizing Poland’s maritime capabilities.
Rywngwelski further elaborated, “The execution of the ‘Ratownik’ program is part of our mission to enhance Poland’s maritime security by equipping it with modern vessels.” This initiative not only aims to improve defense capabilities but also showcases the high standards of the Polish shipbuilding industry in handling complex projects for the Armed Forces.
Specifications of the Ratownik Vessel
The Ratownik will boast impressive dimensions, measuring 96 meters (315 feet) in length and 19 meters (62 feet) in width. Designed to accommodate over 100 personnel, including additional crew members, the vessel will enhance operational efficiency and readiness.
Upon its commissioning, the Ratownik is expected to achieve a top speed of 16 knots (30 kilometers/18 miles per hour) and a remarkable operational range of 6,000 nautical miles (11,112 kilometers/6,905 miles). These specifications highlight the vessel’s capabilities in providing essential support for various naval missions.
