Poland Signs Major Tank Ammunition Contract

Poland has entered into a significant defense contract worth 150 million Polish złoty, equivalent to nearly $39.9 million, to purchase thousands of advanced 120mm tank rounds. This contract has been awarded to Mesko, a company that operates as a subsidiary of the state-owned Polski Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ). This acquisition marks a crucial step in enhancing the capabilities of the Polish military as it seeks to fortify its armored forces.

The 120mm tank rounds are classified as Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding-Sabot Tracer (APFSDS-T) and are specifically engineered to defeat heavily armored targets. Each round weighs approximately 7.3 kilograms (16 pounds) and contains a propellant charge of 8.4 kilograms (18.5 pounds). Designed for high performance, these rounds achieve a remarkable muzzle velocity of about 1,670 meters (5,479 feet) per second, ensuring their effectiveness in combat scenarios.

Advanced Specifications and Compatibility

These rounds are compatible with the Rheinmetall Rh-120/L44 gun, which is mounted on the Leopard 2 main battle tank—a key asset in the arsenal of the Polish forces. Additionally, they can also be utilized with the M256 gun found on the M1 Abrams tank, which is another component of Poland’s military capabilities. This compatibility adds value as it allows for greater flexibility and operational efficiency within diverse combat environments.

Moreover, the ammunition produced by Mesko adheres to NATO standards, which is vital for enhancing interoperability with allied forces. This ensures that Polish troops can effectively collaborate with their NATO partners in joint missions, fostering a unified approach to defense and security in the region.

Future Deliveries and Commitment to Quality

Anticipated deliveries of the new ammunition are set to begin between 2026 and 2027, a timeline that aligns with Poland’s broader military modernization efforts. The procurement of these tank rounds reflects a strategic investment in the country’s defense infrastructure, reinforcing its readiness against potential threats.

Renata Gruszczyńska, President of the Management Board of Mesko, emphasized the company’s dedication to excellence, stating, “Mesko is a company with many years of experience that upholds the highest production standards. We take pride in consistently supplying the Polish Armed Forces with products recognized for their proven reliability, effectiveness, and quality.” This commitment speaks volumes about Poland’s focus on ensuring its military forces are equipped with the best available technology.
