Exail Enhances R7 ROVs with Advanced Sensing Technology
Exail has announced a significant upgrade to its R7 Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) by partnering with Elwave to incorporate cutting-edge electromagnetic sensing technology. This collaboration aims to enhance the target detection capabilities of the R7 fleet. The integration involves equipping several R7 units with Elwave’s Tetrapulse sensors, which utilize Controlled Electric Detection and Ranging (CEDAR) technology. These advanced sensors are expected to significantly improve the R7’s ability to localize and identify a range of underwater targets, including materials like steel, aluminum, and fiberglass composites.
The introduction of CEDAR technology marks a notable advancement in how ROVs can operate in challenging underwater environments. According to Gary Bagot, Sales Director at Elwave, this technology provides exceptional operational performance, especially in murky waters where visibility is poor. The ability to achieve real-time, three-dimensional imaging using biomimetic engineering underscores the innovative approach taken by Elwave to enhance target identification and neutralization missions.
R7 ROVs: Specialized for Underwater Security
Designed specifically for underwater security operations, the R7 ROV excels in navigating hazardous terrains. Its capabilities extend to the safe detection and disposal of unexploded ordnance, which is crucial for ensuring the safety of human divers involved in such missions. The R7 is equipped with a suite of advanced sensors, including sonar, acoustic, and electro-optic systems, that collectively enhance its underwater detection proficiency.
One of the standout features of the R7 is its versatile five-function manipulator arm, which allows for the handling and recovery of objects encountered during missions. Furthermore, the ROV is equipped with high-resolution tilt cameras that provide specialized teams with comprehensive 360° visuals. This feature is invaluable for the precise identification and assessment of explosive devices and hazardous materials, ensuring a thorough evaluation of potential threats.
Technical Specifications and Operational Efficiency
The R7 operates effectively at depths of up to 300 meters (984 feet) and can achieve a forward speed of 3 knots (approximately 3.45 miles or 5.56 kilometers per hour). Weighing in at less than 35 kilograms (77 pounds), the R7’s compact and lightweight design makes it easy to deploy from various platforms, including light support vessels or rigid-hulled inflatable boats.
This remarkable design not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures that the R7 can be swiftly mobilized for urgent missions. The combination of advanced technology and user-friendly deployment options positions the R7 ROV as a critical asset in modern underwater security and operational scenarios.
