Russia’s Naval Ambitions in Sudan
On Wednesday, Sudan’s Foreign Minister confirmed that there are “no obstacles” to Russia’s ongoing efforts to establish a naval base along the Red Sea coast of Sudan. This development marks a significant step in Moscow’s long-standing goal to secure a military presence near Port Sudan, a strategic location that has been a focal point for Russian interests in the region.
The announcement came during the minister’s visit to Moscow, where he emphasized the mutual understanding between Sudan and Russia regarding the proposed naval facility. Ali Youssef, the Sudanese Foreign Minister, remarked that both nations are in full agreement on this matter, though he refrained from elaborating on specific details during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
