Russian Military Drone Strategy Sparks New Combat Initiatives

In a bold move amid its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Russia has announced plans to establish a dedicated military unit focused on unmanned aerial system operations. This initiative, revealed by President Vladimir Putin, aims to deploy the new unit swiftly to address the evolving threats encountered on the battlefield.

The formation is set to comprise separate troops that will operate independently from existing drone operators in Moscow. The command will employ innovative tactics and unconventional strategies, drawing insights from the conflict in Eastern Europe where numerous skirmishes have involved autonomous platforms.

Development of a New Air Defense System

According to the Russian news agency TASS, Putin emphasized the necessity of a new state arms program that will introduce a comprehensive air defense system capable of functioning effectively under various circumstances. This system is designed to neutralize aerial threats, no matter their origin.

If put into action, this military addition will align with Russia’s strategic vision for the future. This plan, revealed last year, aims to establish ‘Unmanned Systems Forces’ by the third quarter of 2025 while aiming to nearly triple the production of unmanned aerial systems by 2030.

Response to Ukrainian Drone Strikes

Putin’s announcement follows a significant drone strike executed by Ukraine in June that resulted in the destruction of bomber aircraft on Russian soil. Ukrainian authorities estimated that this attack caused around $7 billion in damages, affecting several military installations located miles apart and injuring over 60 personnel.

The intricate operation involved Ukrainian drones discreetly transported in shipping containers bound for Russia and was meticulously planned over a span of three years. This strike took place amidst ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, which have often stalled due to unmet conditions from both parties.

Collaboration with North Korea

In a related development, just days before unveiling its new drone force initiative, Russia announced plans to aid North Korea in the production of Shahed suicide drones, a model originally engineered in Iran. These loitering munitions are currently utilized by Russian forces in their operations against Ukraine.

This partnership signals a reciprocal relationship, as North Korea has provided military support to Russia, sending troops and military resources to assist in the ongoing conflict against Ukrainian forces. Recent reports suggest that Russia has the capacity to produce up to 2,000 Shahed drones monthly, with aspirations to boost this output to 5,000 units per month in the near future.
