Serbia Enhances Defense with New Artillery Systems
Serbia has officially finalized a significant defense procurement, securing Israeli-made PULS artillery rocket systems and Hermes 900 reconnaissance drones. This strategic move, valued at $335 million, comes as part of Serbia’s efforts to strengthen its military capabilities amid a regional arms race, particularly against its rival Croatia. The deal, which was initially announced by Elbit Systems in November 2024 without revealing the buyer’s identity, has now been confirmed by local media as a contract between Serbia and the Israeli defense manufacturer.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić recently expressed his confidence in the acquisition, stating, “I’d like to inform you that following persistent negotiations, we’ve signed a deal to acquire the most powerful artillery systems in the world. We’ve also purchased some of the most sophisticated drones in the world.” These advanced systems are expected to be delivered to Serbia by mid-2028, marking a significant upgrade in the country’s military capabilities.
PULS and Hermes 900: Advanced Military Technology
The PULS, or Precise and Universal Launching System, represents a leap in artillery technology. This autonomous rocket system can launch advanced munitions with remarkable precision over distances of up to 300 kilometers (186 miles). Its quick-launch capabilities mean it can commence firing missions within just one minute of activation, allowing Serbia to respond swiftly to any threat.
Complementing the PULS system, the Hermes 900 drones are equipped with high-performance sensors designed for accurate detection of both ground and maritime targets, even in challenging weather. With a payload capacity of up to 350 kilograms (772 pounds), these drones can undertake a variety of operations, including intelligence gathering, surveillance, maritime patrol, and communications support.
Strategic Positioning in Regional Tensions
President Vučić emphasized the importance of these new systems, claiming they surpass Croatia’s US-made weapons in capability. He underscored their advanced features, stating they are “the most sophisticated weaponry in the world… enabling immediate launches and total destruction of targets.” This statement highlights Serbia’s determination to enhance its military readiness in the face of regional challenges.
The ongoing arms race between Serbia and Croatia is fueled by historical tensions, particularly stemming from the violent breakup of Yugoslavia and the Croatian War of Independence during the 1990s. With Croatia recently securing a potential sale of eight M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) from the United States, valued at $390 million, the competition for military superiority in the region has intensified.
Response to Regional Military Developments
In addition to the HIMARS deal, Croatia has bolstered its military capabilities through the acquisition of Bayraktar TB2 drones from Turkey. These developments have prompted Serbia to ramp up its defense investments, including the purchase of 12 Rafale fighter jets from France in 2024. Such acquisitions are part of Serbia’s strategy to maintain a balance of power and ensure its preparedness amid escalating regional dynamics.
As both nations continue to enhance their military assets, the situation remains tense, with each side keenly aware of the other’s capabilities. Serbia’s latest procurement of artillery systems and drones underscores its commitment to safeguarding national security and responding effectively to any perceived threats from its neighbors.
