Skynex Air Defense System Enhances Italy’s Protection
Italy has formally chosen Germany’s Skynex air defense system to bolster its airspace protection capabilities. On Wednesday, Rheinmetall, the manufacturer, announced that it received a substantial order worth 73 million euros (approximately $75 million) for a single Skynex system. This unit will function as a pilot platform for the Italian Army, marking a significant step forward in enhancing national defense.
The Skynex package encompasses a high-performance sensor and tracking unit designed for air surveillance, a command-and-control station, and four 35mm firing units. Additionally, it includes essential components such as ammunition, spare parts, training support, and maintenance services. The delivery of the Skynex platform is anticipated in 2026, with an option for Italy to acquire three more systems, potentially raising the total contract value to 280 million euros (around $288 million).
Overview of the Skynex System
The Skynex system is a cannon-based air defense solution specifically engineered for effective close-range protection against various threats that conventional guided weapons often struggle to neutralize. It boasts an impressive firing rate of up to 1,000 rounds per minute and can engage targets at a range of up to 4 kilometers (2.5 miles). Notably, the system utilizes programmable AHEAD ammunition, which enhances target accuracy and fortifies its resistance against electronic countermeasures.
Rheinmetall has emphasized that the Skynex system is particularly adept at countering drones, missiles, and fast-moving aircraft. The configuration selected by Italy features the XTAR 3D radar, capable of monitoring airspace within a radius of up to 50 kilometers. The Skynex system is not new to the market; it is already contracted with several nations, including Romania, Austria, Qatar, and Ukraine, showcasing its growing international footprint.
