South Korea’s Defense Expansion in the Middle East
South Korea is making significant strides in expanding its defense presence in the Middle East, with a proposal to provide a comprehensive array of military equipment to Iraq. This includes advanced systems such as helicopters, fighter jets, and air defense technology. The discussions took place during the recent IQDEX 2025 defense expo held in Baghdad, which brought together high-ranking officials from Iraq’s defense sector and representatives from South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
Leading the initiative was Ko Hyung-seok, head of the helicopter program division at DAPA, who discussed the sale of additional KUH-1 Surion utility helicopters. This builds on a previous agreement worth $92.7 million, signed in December 2024, for the delivery of two units. Notably, Iraq has shown a keen interest in expanding this deal further, with talks now extending to include the FA-50 light combat aircraft and mobile air defense systems crafted by South Korean defense manufacturers.
Diversifying Military Partnerships
This emerging partnership highlights Iraq’s intent to diversify its military suppliers beyond the dominant powers of the United States and Russia. By considering South Korea’s offerings, Iraq aims to enhance its defense capabilities while exploring new avenues for military cooperation. Emerging Middle Eastern Markets for Korean Defense
Traditionally, Asian and European regions have been the primary markets for South Korean defense products. However, the Middle East is quickly emerging as a vital strategic frontier for defense cooperation. In a noteworthy development, South Korea recently established a cooperation agreement with the United Arab Emirates to collaboratively develop and operate the KF-21 Boramae fighter jets.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia’s recent deployment of the K239 Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system along its southern border signifies a shift in military procurement practices, favoring South Korean defense technologies. These developments illustrate a growing trust in South Korea’s military innovations, paving the way for deeper defense ties in this volatile region.
