Sweden Boosts Military Support for Ukraine
On Thursday, the Swedish government announced a significant increase in military aid to Ukraine, pledging an additional $1.2 billion. This move comes as Europe gears up to take on a more substantial role in supporting Kyiv amid ongoing tensions with Russia. Defence Minister Pal Jonson emphasized during a press conference that this latest package is Sweden’s 18th since the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022, marking it as the largest support effort to date.
Jonson highlighted that this announcement serves as a crucial signal to other European allies regarding the need to collectively prepare for increased responsibility in assisting Ukraine. He stated, “We need to prepare for Europe to take more responsibility for supporting Ukraine,” underlining the importance of unity among European nations in addressing the crisis.
Details of the Aid Package
The total military aid now amounts to 13.5 billion kronor, equivalent to $1.2 billion, with a significant allocation of 5.9 billion kronor, or $536 million, set aside for the procurement of materials from both domestic and international manufacturers. These resources are intended for donation to Ukraine, reflecting a strategic shift from utilizing existing stockpiles to acquiring new military equipment.
Additionally, the package includes one billion kronor dedicated to supporting Ukrainian production capabilities for long-range missiles and advanced drones. This initiative aims to enhance Ukraine’s military effectiveness in its ongoing conflict.
Sweden’s Contributions to Ukraine’s Defense
In a remarkable show of support, the aid package also encompasses contributions from the Swedish Armed Forces valued at 3.3 billion kronor, or approximately $300 million. Notably, this includes the donation of 16 Combat Boat 90 vessels, effectively doubling the number of these critical assets sent to Ukraine.
Historically, Sweden has been a key player in providing military assistance, having delivered the Archer mobile artillery system, 50 CV90 armored combat vehicles, and around 10 Leopard 2 tanks, alongside various anti-air missile systems. Following this latest commitment, Sweden’s total military aid to Ukraine stands at a staggering 61.9 billion kronor, or $5.6 billion, as reported by government sources.
