Norway Forges Ahead with Advanced Sniper Technology
Norway has secured a significant contract with Bertel O. Steen Defence & Security to supply next-generation sniper rifle scopes for its armed forces. This ambitious initiative, valued at 92 million Norwegian kroner (approximately $9 million), features the innovative Thermis Mk2 thermal sight display. This advanced technology is designed to operate effectively both during the day and at night, providing the Norwegian military with enhanced precision targeting and reconnaissance capabilities against infantry, vehicles, and various military apparatus.
The Integration of these scopes into the M107A1 12.7-millimeter anti-materiel rifles is set to take place this summer. These rifles have been procured through a collaboration with Barrett Firearms, a prominent US weapons developer, under a contract established in 2024. The Thermis Mk2 scopes will be produced by Theon International, a Greek firm, with delivery scheduled to the Oslo-based distributor by September 2025.
Key Features of the Thermis Mk2
The Thermis Mk2 is equipped with a variety of sophisticated features, including a built-in digital compass, which enhances operational effectiveness. Its high-resolution display allows for exceptional visibility in challenging environments, enabling quick detection of potential threats through light vegetation. This advanced scope is not only functional as a mounted sight but can also operate as a handheld recording device, capable of monitoring activities at both short and long ranges.
Moreover, the Thermis Mk2 is seamlessly compatible with existing digital management systems, notably the Norwegian Battle Management System and the American Android Team Awareness Kit. This compatibility ensures that troops can operate this cutting-edge technology efficiently within their established frameworks.
Operational Efficiency and Performance
Powered by three AA cartridge-style batteries, the Thermis Mk2 offers impressive operational longevity, providing up to eight hours of use. Furthermore, it includes modern connectivity features like WiFi and Bluetooth, allowing for seamless data transfer. The scope is also equipped with image and video capture capabilities, enhancing the surveillance and reconnaissance potential of Norwegian forces.
Tomas Beck, Head of Norwegian Defence Materiel Land and Joint Capabilities, emphasized the significance of this upgrade in military effectiveness. “The Armed Forces are now receiving state-of-the-art, technically advanced sights that will enhance operational capability,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of innovation in modern military operations.
