Thunder-class Patrol Boats: Lithuania’s Naval Innovation
Lithuanian shipbuilder Western Baltic Engineering has unveiled an innovative design for the Perkūnas (Thunder) class patrol boats, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s naval capabilities. This initiative aligns with Vilnius’ goal to enhance its maritime security assets by integrating cutting-edge features that address current operational gaps and bolster infrastructure protection.
The new patrol boats will each measure 88 meters (289 feet) in length, with a beam of 17 meters (56 feet). Designed to accommodate between 30 to 60 crew members, these vessels will be powered by a robust 6-megawatt engine, allowing them to achieve speeds over 18 knots (33 kilometers/21 miles per hour). Western Baltic Engineering’s Shipyard Group noted that this project is a crucial component of Lithuania’s broader military modernization efforts, contributing to economic growth and activity within the country.
A Vision for the Future
Arnoldas Šileika, CEO of the Western Shipyard Group, expressed optimism about the project’s future, stating, “Through the successful development of the ‘Perkūnas’ conceptual design alongside our partners, we are prepared to move forward.” He highlighted that this achievement reflects the expertise of their dedicated team and serves as a catalyst for further efforts to bring this high-value project to fruition, significantly enhancing the national fleet.
The announcement of the Thunder-class patrol vessel design comes shortly after the Lithuanian government awarded a contract to Dutch shipbuilder Damen for a support vessel intended for the navy in 2024. Additionally, in 2023, Vilnius entered into a partnership with Western Baltic Engineering to conceptualize and develop a new class of warships, with an eye toward delivery by 2030.
