Turkiye Positions Itself as a Key Mediator in Ukraine War Amid Zelensky’s Visit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Turkiye underscores Ankara’s continued push for a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine. Meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Presidential Complex, Zelensky discussed the latest developments in the conflict and Turkiye’s potential role in facilitating negotiations.

President Erdoğan, reaffirming Türkiye’s neutral yet active diplomatic stance, stated:

“Since the first day of the war, we have worked tirelessly to mediate a negotiated peace, based on the principle that war has no winners, and peace has no losers.”

The meeting took place at a time when new diplomatic efforts—particularly those involving former U.S. President Donald Trump—have gained momentum. Erdoğan noted that Türkiye’s three-year approach to mediation aligns with these renewed international efforts, positioning Ankara as a potential host for future negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and Western powers.

Turkiye’s Track Record in Mediation

Türkiye has played a critical role in previous diplomatic efforts:

  • In March 2022, Turkiye facilitated direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul.
  • It was instrumental in launching the Black Sea Grain Initiative, ensuring global food security amid the war.
  • Over the past three years, Turkiye has maintained dialogue with both Moscow and Kyiv, acting as one of the few nations with direct access to both sides.

Beyond War: Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Despite the ongoing war, Turkiye and Ukraine continue to expand economic cooperation, with a mutual commitment to reaching $10 billion in bilateral trade. Erdogan also praised Zelensky’s efforts in safeguarding the rights of Crimean Tatars, reaffirming Türkiye’s dedication to their well-being.

A Critical Moment for Diplomacy

Zelensky’s visit comes at a time when the war is at a strategic crossroads. With renewed diplomatic efforts on the table and Turkiye’s history as a trusted mediator, Ankara appears poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the next phase of peace talks.
