Babcock Secures £65 Million Upgrade Contract
Babcock International has clinched a significant contract worth £65 million (approximately $84 million) aimed at upgrading the UK Royal Navy’s Type 31 frigates. This initiative is part of the Capability Insertion Period (CIP), which focuses on integrating advanced systems and rigorously testing upgrades designed to bolster the operational capabilities of the Type 31 class vessels.
Paul Watson, Managing Director of Arrowhead at Babcock, emphasized that this new contract enhances the military capabilities of these ships, expanding on the original framework established in a design and build agreement signed back in 2019. He affirmed that Babcock’s extensive experience with these vessels will facilitate efficient installation and long-term maintenance of the new systems.
Expertise in Design and Build
Watson remarked, “As the design and build partner, Babcock is uniquely positioned to provide essential knowledge and technical insights needed to execute these vital tasks during the development phases of the ships through the CIP.” This statement underlines Babcock’s pivotal role in ensuring the successful enhancement of the Type 31 frigates.
With an established reputation in maritime manufacturing, Babcock’s expertise is crucial as the company continues its commitment to the Royal Navy. Progress on Type 31 Frigates Project
Currently, Babcock is progressing with the production of five general-purpose Type 31 frigates for the UK Royal Navy, having commenced the construction of the third vessel in October last year. This project is being carried out at Rosyth dockyard in Scotland, renowned as one of the largest maritime manufacturing and repair facilities in the UK.
The Type 31 frigates are designed to replace the aging fleet of five Type 23 general-purpose frigates. Anticipated to enter service by 2028, each of these new vessels will be capable of accommodating a crew of up to 105 members, enhancing the operational capacity of the Royal Navy.
Complementary to Type 26 Frigates
The Type 31 frigates will work in conjunction with the newly introduced Type 26 frigates, which are tailored for submarine detection operations. This strategic pairing aims to bolster the Royal Navy’s operational effectiveness, ensuring preparedness for a range of maritime challenges.
