UAV Technology: Spider Unmanned Ground Vehicle Overview
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has given the green light for the deployment of the domestic ‘Spider’ unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) in military operations. This innovative UGV was designed based on feedback from frontline troops, aiming to bolster the capabilities of the armed forces, especially in engineering and logistics. With a compact design weighing approximately 50 kilograms (110 pounds), the Spider can transport a payload of up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds), making it a versatile tool on the battlefield.
The Spider’s size is particularly advantageous, enabling soldiers to load two units into the back of a standard pickup truck for easy transport. This UGV comes equipped with four robust engines, allowing it to maneuver effectively across difficult terrains and through restricted spaces. Its design facilitates operation in electronic warfare environments and grants it the ability to ascend steep slopes with ease.
An Overview of the Donkey UGV
In addition to the Spider, the Ukrainian defense agency made headlines earlier in May by announcing the formal rollout of another UGV known as the ‘Donkey.’ This vehicle significantly expands logistics capabilities by transporting up to 200 kilograms (441 pounds) of equipment. It can also assist in towing larger military vehicles, such as SUVs, which may find themselves bogged down in muddy conditions.
The Donkey is distinguished by its electronic warfare-resistant control system, allowing it to operate seamlessly with wired modules. This feature ensures remote operations can be conducted effectively in challenging field scenarios, showcasing the advancements in Ukrainian military technology as they adapt to modern warfare demands.
